WHO Raises Alert Over Acute Scarcity of Obesity Jabs

Fewer than a tenth of individuals who could benefit from weight-loss injections such as Wegovy can access them, states the global health agency as it publishes its initial guidance on the drugs.

Given over a billion individuals worldwide currently obese, it is advocating for increased and just availability to this class of drugs.

Based on projections, more than two billion are projected to be obese by 2030 unless action is taken.

"The new guidelines affirms that excess weight is a long-term condition that can be addressed with thorough and lifelong care," stated WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

High costs, insufficient output, and logistical bottlenecks are major obstacles to widespread access to the treatments that can help people shift considerable body mass, says the agency.

Even in the current most optimistic outlook, the supply of such drugs might only reach around 100 million people – fewer than 10% of the global need, as stated by the health organization.

The advice encourages governments and firms to widen access, by strategies like voluntary licensing.

Exclusive production rights on the active ingredient – the primary component of Novo Nordisk's Wegovy – is set to lapse in several countries in 2026.

The Way Obesity Injections Work

The injections replicate a biological compound to slow digestion, curb appetite and boost satiety so users reduce food intake.

Patients usually begin shedding pounds within a few weeks of beginning the regular doses.

Research indicates users may put most of the weight back on a year later of discontinuing the treatment, because their typical appetite return.

To be carrying excess weight raises your chance for developing medical conditions, such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and specific malignancies.

Excess weight impacts individuals in every country and was associated with 3.7 million deaths worldwide in 2024, per the WHO.
